Can anyone tell me how to password protect Windows ME?
I don't want my relatives to be able to access windows.
I just have a pc that is not networked. I am the only one
who should be able to get access to the desktop. Can
anyone help?

Thanks,
Mark

Depending on the type of computer you have, the process varies. But at some
point when you first turn your computer on, you may see something that says
PRESS <DEL> TO ENTER SETUP. Or, it might say <F2> or <F1> or <F10>
or...etc...etc...

Once in setup, go to the PASSWORD or SECURITY section and set your password.
Do NOT take this process lightly. Forget your password and you'll lock
yourself out requiring an expensive visit from a technician to reset it for
you. Some laptops can not have passwords reset, and if the password is
forgotten, the laptop must be shipped back to the manufacturer.

Thanks for the reply Carey,

Your instructions work fine for a Bios password but I'm
looking for the windows password to lock anyone out from
my desktop Specifically I'm looking to use the password
prompt provided before the start of my desktop. From what
I read at microsoft I should be able to do this using the
user, password and network icons in the control panel.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Mark

Windows Me wasn't designed for that type of security. The purpose of
the Windows logon prompt is simply to identify the user so that Me
knows which person's settings (desktop, Favorites, wallpaper, etc) to
display. As you know, you can cancel the logon prompt and get access
to Windows as a default user.

The only sure way to keep other people out of your computer is to use
a BIOS password, as Carey Holzman has suggested.

Here are two ways to prevent casual users from bypassing the logon.
Users with some advanced Windows knowledge can defeat them, although
#2 is much harder to defeat than #1.

1. When the logon is canceled, Windows actually logs the user on as
the "default" user. You can configure the default user to be
immediately logged off, causing the logon prompt to return:

http://registry.winguides.com/display.php?629

2. Doug Knox has developed a procedure which requires a valid logon:

http://www.dougknox.com

Click "Security" and then click "Prevent Unauthorized Users from
accessing your computer". Be sure to follow the steps exactly as
documented.

Windows 95/98/Me do not have secure passwords that will do what you want.
You will need Windows 2000/XP for this.

Hence, my recommendation for the BIOS password which will start the computer
and BOOT into Windows unless the correct password is entered when the
computer is turned on.

Thanks for your help Carey,

I noticed a friend use his XP startup prompt to password
proctect his pc. When we tried this on my ME edition it
did not work. So now I am using the BIOS to lock out
intruders.

Thanks again,
Mark
