When a customer of mine tries to access a shared file or
folder (or drive for that matter) on her secretary's new
win2k pc from her win98 pc, a dialog box appears asking
for a password, although there isn't one set for it.
Is there a way around this?

Create an identical (same username/password) account on both computers. Log
into the win98 computer using that account.

By default Windows 98 machines pass the currently logged in
username/password as credentials for file shares. So using the same
username/password or create unique usernames on Windows 2000 machine for
each Windows 98 machine.
