As I understand it, IPC stands for Inter-Process Communication. The
IPC$ prompt occurs when:
1. A Windows 95/98/Me computer tries to access a Windows 2000/XP
computer over a network, and:
2. The Windows 2000/XP computer is configured to validate the user
name that requests access. Windows 2000 is always configured that
way. Windows XP is configured that way in the two cases that I listed
above.
The IPC$ prompt has no specific association with Internet Protocol.
It can occur regardless of what protocol the network uses. The IPC$
prompt applies to all shared disks and folders on a Windows 2000/XP
computer, not just to the C$ administrative share.
If the IPC$ prompt appears when trying to access a Windows 2000
computer, there is no correct response. The solution is to create a
user account on Windows 2000 with the same user name and password that
you use to log onto Windows 95/98/Me.
