I have a network with 6 PC's in it. 4 of them are Windows
XP (home and pro) 1 of them is Win98 and 1 of them is Win
Me. All of them have the same workgroup and all XP's sees
each other and can share resources depending on given
rights. But I cannot get connected on the shares from the
Win Me and the 98 machine. They always says: Enter
password for the following resourece \\compname\IPC$
and neither password works. From either XP machine I can
work on the 98 and Me machine but reverse I stuck. On the
XP machine I have a user account and password the same as
on the Me and 98 machine but still asking for that
strange IPC$ password. Another thing is that I have
connected the main-XP machine through ISDN on the
Internet and with a proxy server (analogx) I can work on
the Internet from the 98 and the Me machine
So my question is: Why that password and how can I solve
that problem. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I have als o read all the tips etc and a earlier
mentioned problem about this, but gives no solution.

Regards,
Jan van IJsseldijk

Run the Network Setup Wizard on each XP computer (but not on 98 or Me)
to fully enable file sharing:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm

That's usually all that's needed. Here are some unusual cases that
require more action:

1. If you've created a password for the Guest account on an XP
computer, enter that password at the IPC$ prompt.

2. If you've disabled simple file sharing on XP Professional, make
sure that the Everyone group has access permission on the shared disks
and folders. Details here:

The only question left for me: Is there anyone who can
tell me where that IPC$ password has to deal with. Where
is it related with. I think it has to deal with the
Internet Protocol C$ share to deal and that share is a
difficult to handle one. But maybe I am wrong

As I understand it, IPC stands for Inter-Process Communication. The
IPC$ prompt occurs when:

1. A Windows 95/98/Me computer tries to access a Windows 2000/XP
computer over a network, and:

2. The Windows 2000/XP computer is configured to validate the user
name that requests access. Windows 2000 is always configured that
way. Windows XP is configured that way in the two cases that I listed
above.

The IPC$ prompt has no specific association with Internet Protocol.
It can occur regardless of what protocol the network uses. The IPC$
prompt applies to all shared disks and folders on a Windows 2000/XP
computer, not just to the C$ administrative share.

If the IPC$ prompt appears when trying to access a Windows 2000
computer, there is no correct response. The solution is to create a
user account on Windows 2000 with the same user name and password that
you use to log onto Windows 95/98/Me.
