Hi,

I have an Atheros chipset based card, can I put this into passive mode for
scanning? If so what software can I use for windows? Its an SMC EliteConnect
high power 2.4/5 ghz using the Atheros chipset (including superG jamming
capability )

Thanks

Bump... Learn linux. Kismet (contrary to what you stated elsewhere)
will run on windows, but you had better know what you are doing before
tackeling that install 'cause it is non-trivial.

There is no passive sniffer for windows as far as I know.

Why would you want to jam anyone?

Last time I checked, there was no freeware driver for Windows that will put
the Atheros chipsets in promiscuous mode. Anything that runs over the
WinPcap lib - Ethereal, for example - will not work with wifi cards that use
Atheros.

There is a freeware Linux driver for Atheros (madwifi project), but it uses
a proprietary binary hardware-adaptation layer written by a programmer under
contract to Atheros. This layer has not been ported to Windows, so the
madwifi driver - as far as I know at this time - has not been ported to
Windows.

The only Windows drivers I know of that will support Atheros promiscuous
mode are proprietary drivers from companies that signed Atheros NDAs and
market their drivers in expensive commercial software analyzer or scanner
packages.

I have linux installed in Vmware and its plain shit when it comes to time
wasted vs actually doing something useful.

I will be connecting to a windows network so yeah it would help to have
windows runing.

etherreal, why would I use that POS, I have netmon.

GTK isnt exactly awe inspiring when it comes to a usability.(my drawing
tablet drives it nuts, and it cant even repaint a UI when u are resizing it
it only does it when u get a size finished event wtf, its just hacked
together and not really well thought out).

Well if Madwifi can stick the atheros chipset into promiscous mode, then we
already have the info to stick it into that mode. Just write a driver for
windows. Cant be that hard .

Anyway, another question. Can I use WMI to control (and not just query with
WQL) the wifi card? If so I can hack up a quick app in C# using
System.Management classes (saves me wraping the NDIS APIs int the flat DLLs)

As I said, the madwifi driver sits over a binary-only hardware abstraction
layer. This layer exports an interface that includes promiscuous mode. The
actual hardware interface is not available unless you sign an NDA or
reverse-engineer the binary layer. The contractor who did the work will not
be leaking that information. Unless someone has been working on this in
secret, last time I checked the binary layer had not been ported from Linux
to Windows, and the contractor had other priorities. I'm sure you're welcome
to do it yourself - the binary is available via the madwifi project. All you
have to do is dissassemble the code and write an NDIS driver interface in
assembly, after ripping out the Linux interface.

Anybody want to leak these?

1. Try downloading the Overnet/E Donkey file sharing app and type in
"Airopeek"

2. Be happy & grateful......
