When the users take their machines home, they do a local login when they
boot up, not a domain login. So the credentials they present to access
domain resources after connection will not be their domain credentials. The
only way I know around this (apart from the net use ... /user: you mention)
is to log into the domain at connection time using the login using a dialup
connection option.
XP has a modified credentials manager which does send the correct domain
credentials when you are connected remotely.
