I am getting 50% packet loss on an ethernet run that I
installed onto a W98 machine & 3com 900b NIC. I can surf
just fine with my laptop on the cable, so I am confident
that it is not the cabling. The laptop surfs fine, but it
is using a 10/100 card. Any suggestions on what to check
for?

Set the network adapters at both ends to 10 MBits/s &
half duplex. Does the problem still occur? If not, got to
10 MBits/s & full duplex, then 100 MBits/s & half duplex,
100 MBits/s & full duplex, Autosense.

The results will indicate if your network cabling is capable
of sustaining an operation at the maximum speed. Packet
loss usually indicates an excessive error rate.
