Outlook across a network

Is there an easy way to do this? I want to be able to access my e-mail
(and get new mail notifications) from the Outlook installed on my PC
when I'm using my laptop on the wireless network, without having to
run two separate installations of the program. When I try and setup a
shortcut on the laptop to point to the Outlook installation on the PC,
(which is what I do with my newsreader) it doesn't work.

If I do, is there an easy way to synch the two installations so that I
don't have to search on both computers for, say an e-mail I received a
couple of weeks ago?

Have you considered installing VNC on your PC, and remotely accessing that PC
from your laptop? That's what I do.

Sorry I forgot that XC Connect can sync Calendar, Contacts & TODO, but not emails.

AFAIK, you just 'tell' your laptop the path to your .pst file on your
desktop.

Of course, you'll need to be connected to the network at the time.

You also need to make sure that your laptop is set to retain messages on
the email server so that although you have a reference to it on your
laptop, the main desktop carries all the 'master' email.

I don't think there is a wy to sync Outlook, but if there is, i'll be as
pleased about it as you no doubt will be!

OMG. Why didn't I think of that... LOL.

Yeah if you tell outlook to store your PST file in a different folder, say
for example \My Documents\MAIL as opposed to it's regular one (You do this
by going to New > Outlook Data File), you should be able to then Share that
particular folder. THEN, on the other machine, if you set IT to read the
mail store from \\ComputerName\Mail\outlook.pst or similar then
theoretically, it should read the same PST file as the other machine. The
other machine HAS to be on of course.

I might try and put this to the test... I'll be back with my results

My solution to keep email in sync was to set up an IMAP server on a
not-very-well spec'd piece of rubbish I had lying around. Works well as
I use three different mail clients. Installing SquirrelMail on the box
(Took 15 minutes tops) gave me web access to it too. Always makes
people go "Coo!" when they see I can access my mail over the web from my
15 or so email addresses without being bombarded with adverts!

I'd be interested if the above solution works though. I'd have thought
it may cause problems when running two instances of Outlook at once. Be
careful to make backups before your experiment!

IT WORKED !

OK here's what I did. For ease, I moved my PST file from it's Default
location. (You have to click on View > Folder Otions > Show hidden files)

This is normally, C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local
Settings\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

I Cut and Pasted my PST into a folder called MAIL on a separate drive. So
now it was D:\Mail\Outlook.pst

I then opened up Outlook on the main machine. IT complained about not being
able to find the PST. It then asked me to point it to the location. I
pointed it to my PST's NEW location on the D Drive. Once done, it complained
again and shut Outlook down. Next time I loaded, it loaded my PST from the
new location and all my mail was there.

SO, I then Set the new MAIL folder to Shared status with full Read/Write
access (remember the permissions).

On the OTHER Machine, I created a new profile and set up Outlook in it. It
created a default PST of course. I went in and deleted the PST from
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local
Settings\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Next time I opened up Outlook, it
complained like the other machine. THIS time however, I pointed Outlook to
look at \\maincomputer\Mail\Outlook.pst. It complained and shut down. The
next time I opened up Outlook on the second computer, it loaded the PST that
was stored on the 1st computer with ALL the mail n' stuff ) - Perfect.

I sent some test emails. When one machine downloaded it, it showed up on the
other machine and vice versa.

Now one drawback. If Outlook was open on One machine, and I opened it up on
the other machine, the other machine would complain that it couldn't open
the PST because it was in use on another machine. SO, remember to have
Outlook open ONLY on ONE machine at a time. (But you must remember to have
what is effectively the mail profile host switched on, Ooh and remember of
course to set up your account on the second PC identically to the 1st PC)

With regards to not being able to open up the PST on two machines, this may
have been down to the fact I was logged into one machine with the account
set up in Person A's profile as opposed to one identical to mine and on the
other machine, I was logged into a newly created test account with Different
login details.

Try setting up a profile that is Identical in name and password on EACH
machine and see if it allows access to the PST on two machines at once.

Anyway. it 99.9% works ) - Don't know why I didn't think of it before..
heh

Btw, you do not need to leave mail on the server. If both machines are
reading the same PST, they'll see identical mail. Delete mail off one
PC,when you view the profile on the other, the deleted email will not be
there etc..
