hi, i'm a newbie to taking wireless outdoors... a friend and i are
going to install a wireless network at his fishing lodge in alaska in
order to offer web access to vacationers staying in cabins on the
grounds. The max distance we need to reach is 400ft, all clear line
of site. I figure we'll need:

ap/router at gateway
omni diretional 8 to 12 gain antenna
lightning arrestor
AP at each cabin
possibly a diretional antenna at far cabin to recieve signal.
cabling, etc.

I've been reading through this group and have seen suggestions for
several pieces of equipement, but does any one company offer a more
complete solution that anyone would recommend (so that we're sure the
antenna connects to the ap etc.)? Also, cold we do this with consumer
equipment.. DLink, etc.

Is there a newbie guide to doing something like this?

thanks.

d

Add bear repellant to your list.

Also, enlist local moose (meese) as repeater stations. Wrap thier antlers
in tinfoil and position them strategically for an optimum signal.

Better yet just attach repeaters to their backs along with a huge solar
panel. Then attach sector antennas to the antlers.

No seriously, the plan that you have is fine. Everything should work fine
except I don't think you need an access point at every cabin. Just get an
industrial quality access point like a Proxim or Cisco. Stick it in the
middle of the cabins with a high gain antenna that you could purchase from
Proxim or Cisco mounted on a high pole. Yeah and you don't want long antenna
cable runs they lose signal very fast, better mount the Access Point on the
pole and lead power and Ethernet up to the pole.
