Can anyone tell me how to get the network shares to ask for a username and
password on xp pro.

I have shared drive d:/ out on a xp pro machine full shared to user PC1.

When trying to access it from another xp pro pc i expect it to come up and
ask for the admin username and password (for PC1) but it doesnt, it just
refuses.

The only way to get access is when i click add 'everyone' which i don't want
to do that.

Any ideas?

Does it refuse even if you're logged on as 'PC1' on the other machine?

IIRC You need a user on the host machine that matches the username on the
client.

I heard this but surely you don't have to create muliple users on every PC
just to give access each.
I want to have just one user on each and use that one users username and
pass.

Yes

Computer1 - User called PC1
Computer2 - User called PC2

Both are logged in. On Computer1 i shared out D:/ and gave full access
rights to User PC1.

When i try and access Computer1 from Computer 2. I expect it to ask me for
the username and
password for user PC1 but it doesnt it simply refuses the connection.
I even logged User PC1 out to see if that was the problem, but Computer2
still cannot get Computer1 it to ask for a username/password.
I would have thought this would work.

By default, network access on XP is set to "guest only" and the
"guest" account is deactivated....

If you want specific users to have access, go to "folder options" in
control panel, select "view" and uncheck "use simple file sharing"
(it's right at the bottom).

While you are at it, have a look through all the other options and
correct Micro$oft's loony defaults.

The alternative is to leave simple file sharing active and activate
the "guest" account on the target machine.

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, trying to get sharing up
on a win2k pro machine - it always demanded a login password, despite me
setting it up for "everyone", and the way I appear to have "cured" it
was by disabling the firewall and rebooting - I was then able to access
the shared drive without a problem.

I set the firewall to fire up again on a reboot, and power cycled the
machine, and its worked ever since - not sure why it didn`t until I
completely killed the firewall though. Permission had been set in the
firewall to allow that specific IP address "in" (I have the IP address
tied to the MAC in my router).

Yes, but what happens if you also create a user called PC1 on computer 2,
and log on to computer 2 as that user. Does that then give you access to the
share on Computer 1? (without prompting for a password - because you've
already done that bit when logging on)

[Have to admit that I'm guessing a bit as I'm only using XP-Home (not Pro)
and that has a lot less security options for sharing - even less than my old
W98 machine!]

It won't work if "simple file sharing" is selected in your folder
options.

Completely barmy but there it is.

It's the only way I've got it to work. I'd love to hear of another
way.

And good luck to you, sir!
