I'm suddenly heading to Germany next week (not just for the beer!) I
haven't had to bring my laptop for foreign travel before. I'm assuming
the wireless routers in europe use the 802.11b/g protocol also. Can
anyone confirm this for me?

Thanks in advance. I'd buy you a dunkelweissen!

The only difference in 802.11b/g between the EU and the US is that they use channels 12 and 13,
which are not allowed by the FCC. Depending on your OS, you won't be able to use those channels, but
they probably will be using channels 1, 6, or 11 for the same reasons we do here.

I lived for a year in Bayreuth (northern Bavaria) and I would really like to take you up on the
Weiss bier offer.

Have a good trip.

ah, the friend that I stay with in Frankfurt had her router set for
channel 12 by the installation guy. I had wondered about that. she just
got a new setup so I knew some things would be different. everyone else in
her neighborhood - and there are tons of wifis in that neighborhood - were
on other more 'normal' channels.

to the OP I haul my laptop with me without a thought. but I use it mostly
at my friend's place.

I'll leave you guys to your beers and Bavaria? long ago I spent a decade
in München in one awful year.
