Having postponed it for years, I'm finally going to get myself a
hosting service and set up a simple web site ((personal, not
commercial). After a little googling, the choices seem endless. I'd
greatly appreciate a few recommendations to get me started please.

Cyberprog are well thought of:

Alex sometimes participates in some of the uk groups. I have one site
hosted with them and have been pleased.

I also have a couple of sites hosted with Heart Internet, higher cost,
more facilities and excellent service:

why are my suspicions immediatelly raised when I see ".co.uk domains
from only 9p" then can't find this price on their prices page?

Ah, then you look at their transfer in page and it's only for renewals
of transfers in. And there is an asterisk. The 9p excludes the Nominet
fee.
Yeah, right,

I'm looking at Home Professional, which seems richly featured. Its
headline is "from £8.99", fairly expensive I thought, £108 /year.
Looking further, that becomes £9.49 by credit card, my usual
preference. And then the small print "Prices exclude VAT @ 17.5%". So
that's £11.15/month, £134/year, or a bit lower if you pay for the year
in advance.

I haven't quite ruled it out, but I do get somewhat put off when
'Home' product adverts only reveal the VAT exclusion after some
searching. Or is that common practice with hosting services?

If its just a personal website, then your ISP account will probably provide
more than enough space / bandwidth.

Failing that. I've always bought domains from www.easily.co.uk and
www.1and1.co.uk
Hosting - most are on 1and1.

I have had years of great service with clara.net. Quite a few other
people I know have too.

Their 29.99 a year service is great.

I'd second that, I have had a site for a year with
Cyberprog and no problems, very friendly service, prompt replies to any
questions.
