Anyone care to speculate on the equipment used and the associated software?

Can do this with any network-ready webcam, e.g. Axis webcams can ftp,
live-stream and email jpegs.

You can use any webcam you like as long as you don't mind leaving your PC on
and have an always on connection. Motion detector software is freely
available on the net. Take a look on download.com and google.

A friend of mine has webcams in every room in the house (although maybe
not the bathroom..!) and external ones looking at the driveway and the
garden. He can access them from any web browser or even his phone..!

I discarded bog-standard webcams that connect to a PC as a burglar would
probably take the PC, thus loose pictures from then on. A networked webcam
connected to a router would still take pictures unless he takes the router
as well.

Lucky for the burglar that Mr Grisby wasn't home at the time. He's an
assistant martial arts instructor, according to his site! (Could be
Tai Chi though...)

I used a cheapo Creative webcam a while back, that would detect motion and
send snaps via email, cost was under £20 I seem to remember..

A lot of software can be set to automatically upload the pictures to
somewhere else so even if the PC is nicked the images will still be
available. Someone mentioned ftp earlier in the thread.
