Hope you won't mind this off topic subject. Just need a little
advice.

I have purchased a video to usb capture lead from ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1807140479...84.m1439.l2649

to copy some old vhs films I have onto dvd. But the red/yellow/white
leads are female, the same as on my tv/vcr. Would I be able to buy
m/f adaptors or have I bought the wrong thing here?

you've got the right thing - you just need some leads to go with it -
assuming you're connecting your vcr to it - a set of phono av leads will
do the trick assuming that's an output from your vcr.
otherwise you'll have to find a scart - phono lead.

Yes, that's normal. "Equipment" has sockets, and is connected by
"connecting leads" with plugs on each end which may be extended by
"extension leads" with a plug on one end and a socket on the other. Your
USB converter is "equipment", and although it's sockets are on short
flying leads instead of mounted to the converter body, they still follow
the convention for being "equipment" rather than "connecting lead" or
"extension lead".

Looked today - didn't see any.
Lidl are flogging it though - for a bloody tenner.

VCR phono sockets are usually for input from a
camcorder. For the lead, make sure it's set up for
output to the phono plugs, or at least can be switched
for that.
