Hi all, just brought a seex 5 port lan switch yesterday to link up the
other 2 pc's and the Ps2 to the creative DSL Blaster DSL router because
its a single port one. here's where my problem starts we can get net
connection great though all the pc's and the PS2 that's no problem. The
router set's up the internal ip addess via DCHP 192.168.x.3 upto
192.168.x.14 that worked how i wanted it fine when it the modem was
plugged into the one pc in the front room. my stepson likes playing games
on his pc e.g quake 2 , stuff like that i've in the router's firewall and
opened the ports for quake 2 and added the ip address 192.168.x.12 what
the dchp gave the pc when it was switched on , now the funny thing is when
we came back 2day after going away for the night , he switched the pc on
upstairs to play quake 2 and couldnt connect to any servers when i did a
ipconfig on the machine it said that the ip address was 192.168.x.10 and
when i switched mine on it said ip addess 192.168.x.11. what i want to do
is give all the pc's static ip addess and still have access to the net and
network ie. the router's ip addess is 192.168.x.1 so i would like the pc's
to have PC1 in the front room 192.168.x.2 , PC2 upstairs 192.168.x.3 , pc
3 In the back room 192.168.x.4 and still be able to use the games / Msn
messenger. Bear share stuff like that from the machine what that program
is installed on and it to work like it should. Do i have to turn off the
DCHP server in the router or can i leave that on? how do i set the network
card's up and to connect though the modem? the operating sytems are 1 win
xp pro and 2 win 98se machine's and can i set the ps2 up like the same but
with 192.168.x.5 ? hope someone can explain in english couse i've read the
manual and still cant figure it out.

Sorry about it being a long post but i cant explain stuff like that in a
couple of lines couse i'm a newbie to network'ing and router's stuff like
that

TIA

you can leave it on.

assign manual IP addresses as you outlined, Network Connections /
Properties / TCPIP / Properties select the "use the following IP
address" option rather than "Obtain an IP address automatically" on
each PC.

http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/win98.html may help

maybe it was typed and written in the style of your question... my
head hurts ...

<Snip>

just a update on the last post i wrote. I think i've managed to get the
bl**dy problem sorted out i think , taken me from 12:00 BST to get this
far. went into the network card settings in windows xp and instead of the
card finding the ip address via DCHP i changed it to static ip address and
entered 192.168.x.2 into the ip address 255.255.2552.0 in the subnet
address and the routers ip address into the gateway box then clicked on
apply rebooted the machine and yes it came back with the ip address i
entered , lovely. hehehe now to do the real test i thought , installed
quake 2 onto my machine , went into the firewall settings on the router ,
changed the fowarding address it had b4 to the new ip address and rebooted
the router , switched my pc off and switched one of the other pc's on then
switched mine back on , fired up quake 2 , connected to a game server
phew!!!. so now got to do that on all the other pc's i'll do that
tommorow , after i format them and put the router back to default settings
aswell. But i still dont know if i should disable the dchp server in the
router? will it make any differnce of not if i do disable the DCHP server
in the router?

<close> from me anyway if somebody know's about the dch idea post it no
matter if it sounds cr*p

If you have the same IPs in the dhcp server as you have set statically
in the PCs you could end up with duplicate IP addresses if any PCs get
their address from dhcp. You need to ensure that the address range in
the dhcp server does not conflict with your static addresses or disable
the dhcp server.

Thx Brian for that tip , i will disable the dchp server in the router ,
i'll feel a bit better then anyway then i know i've got the same ip
address everytime i boot the machine's up. Then i can start sorting the
firewall out :-p , adding ports to the right machine with that ip address
and program installed on

Thx again Brian
