I wanted to do a similiar thing, had an old IBM thinkpad that had XP on it
(SLOW...)
so I tried my hand at red hat linux, what a waste of time.
Now, I will admit that I didn't tweak it to be super fast(if that's
possible) but I just installed it with default settings and it was as slow
if not maybe slower than XP. I was bummed, cause I kinda liked the idea of
trying out linux and checking it out... so the laptop sits there, in
limbo... not doing anything.
I'm not saying you shouldn't try it, I'm just sharing my experience since
they are so similiar (I just wanted a machine to listen to music and surf on
in the garage, no server apps or anything)
