[OT]? Question About Skype

Hi there,

I've a question about Skype. I've downloaded it, I've cancelled my
landline and now I'm using it for outgoing calls.

At present nobody can ring me, as I need the SkypeIn.
What I'd like to know is, when I go to the Skype site and register it
logs my number as a 0207 number which as you know is a London number.

If someone rings me does this mean they'll be ringing a national rate
instead of a local one?

It'll be as if they call a London 0207 number. So the rate is a normal
landline charge, etc.

The other thing is - You've cancelled your landline, so what about 999
emergency calls?

Right. So since I'm in Newcastle it would be a national rate.

Have you looked a www.sipgate.co.uk ? You get a number for free for most area
codes including a London 020 number if you wish.

Calling a 01 or 02 number like the Birmingham 0121 or London 020 number
assigned to a VoIP service will be exactly the same as if it was to a real
landline, also note there is no difference in cost between a so called local
number and a national number. BT or whoever will charge the same cost to call
your next door neighbour as it does to call someone a 300 miles away.

Check www.sipgate.co.uk and you should be able to get a number local to your
area (when I got my number, there were choices only of a few major cities
but now they cover almost every place - mine is an 029 number but I had
the choice of 020, 0121, 0131, 0141, etc. It gives free voicemail ->
e-mail for you, and uses SIP - not a propriatary protocol which locks
you in - SIP is much more widely used and there are other services
able to interconnect with supgate, etc, etc.

Worth checking on uk.telecom.voip as that has been a busy group!

Why on earth rely on a PC-based system like Skype..? You'd be far better
off with a proper VoIP system where you can use an ordinary telephone with
an adaptor.

With most of the available providers (Sipgate, Voipfone etc.) you also get
a phone number in whatever area you want, so if you're in Newcastle you
can have one from there, or from wherever people are likely to call you
most. I have a London number and a Birmingham one, as that's where most of
my calls come from, although I am in neither area.

BTW how do you get internet access with no landline..? I assume you're on
cable..?

Incidentally, for most people there is little if any difference between
the cost of a "local rate" and "national rate" call, so in practice it's
unlikely to cost anyone any more to call you on a London as opposed to a
Newcastle number.

I suggest if you want more info you try uk.telecom.voip but be aware the
trolls are rather active at the moment..!

Ivor

I'm not subscribed, but am very glad that voip is no longer within uk.telecom
and largely away from this group (and u.t.v is somewhere to point queries on
any other group, too :-) There was I expecting to be pulled up for 'supgate'
as if it was the boozer I'd stumbled from a little before :-) Peter M.

So I don't have to pay for added hardware.
