Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and am having trouble connecting
wirelessly to the internet.
I can successfully ping websites eg, microsoft.com but I cannot get
the web to work, IE or Firfox.

Any ideas why ping might work but http not?

This is running through an ADSL router with 2 other wired connections
and 1 wireless. All of these other machines work fine.

Thanks for any ideas

Put 64.233.187.99 into your browser's address bar and see if Google comes
up- if it does, it's probably a DNS issue.

If it doesn't, it might be a firewall issue on the laptop, or else your
router is blocking web access to that machine somehow. Also make sure the
laptop is connecting to your own router and not a neighbor's. Good luck.

Likely not a DNS issues, since poster said they can ping google, etc. as
opposed to ip numerical address, i.e. DNS is working.

Most likely. Poster should go into router with a browser (192.168.1.1 for
Linksys, I think it is 192.168.1.0 for Netgear), check wireless settings,
especially for whether ssid is broadcast, if WEP/WPA is turned and and if
so what is the key for access, is MAC filtering security turned on and if
so add laptop MAC wifi address to the list in the router.

Also can laptop connect to other wifi out and about at cafes? If so,
laptop firewall is not restricting wifi surfing, it is at the level of the
router.

oh duh, never mind about ssid, wep, mac; poster said they can ping so they
have wifi, just not http. well i just got up, 6:40am, yet to get coffee,
sorry. Maybe check port 80 on router for availability to the laptop LAN
connection (port 80 is for http, i.e. browsing), also any software
firewall on both systems.

heh, understood. :-) Certainly if the OP is pinging domain names and
they're resolving, then I was mistaken about DNS.

My Spidey sense tells me it's one of two things- either the unit is
actually connecting to the wrong network (and therefore the signal is too
weak to ever pull down a web page), or else a simple uninstall and
reboot/reinstall of the wireless card will resolve it.

Any web proxy settings enabled on the laptop?
Is a firewall installed which might have blocked the outgoing http service?

I am a linux geek, so if the OP was using linux I could be of more help
since console commands can provide detailed output (e.g. use of 'iwconfig'
command, etc); but I suspect OP (zeebop) is using WindowsXP.

Sometimes there can be problems with IPv6 issues in not getting browser
connection, that could be something to consider; google for "ipv6 unable
to browse web" to see this issue.

Probably a lose wire somewhere, maybe the ethernet cable.

Thanks for all your replies.
A bit more info:
Got it working if I turned router off, then all PC's connecting to it.
Booted back up router then booted wireless PC up.

Doesnt seem completely happy though.
can ping domain names so dont think dns is the issue.
The only thing I can seem to see that might be the problem is that it
sometimes picks up a weird internal ip. Should be 192.168.0.x but
sometime gets (from memory) 62.269.232.xx type address (my external IP
start with 8 something, its Pipex, so I dont know what that 62 ip is
about.
It is set to pick up DNS automatically. Just dont know why its being
allocated incorrectly sometimes. Router displays it as connected ok
with the correct internal ip, but both windows wireless thing and
intel wireless software (although connects to wireless router ok)
sometimes picks up that weird ip.

I dunno. Computers.

The IP address, or certainly the .269. bit, isn't correct.

I'm wondering, however, did you get this laptop from work? What
you are describing makes me think you have some sort of VPN running,
and you really need to get that turned off for this to work. Get
rid of any web proxy configuration in your browser as well.

I don't know enough about Windows to tell you any more than this,
however.
