I was hoping someone could help me out, my newsserver is very slow, takes
ages to download headers. My isp is talk talk broadband and I use
news.talktalk.net on port 119. It all stared a few months ago when they had
issues with the news server and I went down for a few days. I hasn't been
right since then. I have tried other news servers but its the same. Is there
a possibility that talk talk slows traffic on this port?, or even my router,
but nothing has changed my side?

many thanks

john

Are they restricting access speeds to news servers? They may be throttling usenet
traffic. Can you use another port to connect to an external server? If so and you get
a better speed then your ISP is restricting your speed

I feel they might be, what other ports can I use and how would I connect to
a external server?

Thanks

AstraWeb are one possible option, although you do need to buy Gigs of download. There
are other servers that offer free connections though, Yottanews does I think. (Though
I've not checked). Worth Googling to find some free ones to try

AS far as ports are concerned that will depend on your news provider, but 23, 1818
and 8080 are used by some providers.
