Do a google search for electromagnetic pulse , and lightning.

Basically the very high voltages can induce a current in nearby wiring and
that can be enough to disrupt the signals between the two NICs

There was a lightning storm that came very close to me and my network today.

During this with every nearby flash of lightning i got a "Network Cable
Unplugged" message from Windows XP.

Why did it do this? my computer is wired to a Netgear DS104 hub (The metal
ones) and have another hub and router on the network. If that wasnt worrying
a later bolt caused my PC to restart even though the power didnt go off and
gave me a lot of corrupt files

The house next-door-but-two got hit last week during the storms.
Almost all of the ethernet ports that were in use at the time on my
home network blew (new PCI card for my PC, new 5-port switch as only 2
ports were left working, and a new Netgear WGR614 router as the
wireless part was OK, but the ethernet port went). The only one that
survived was the one on my NTL cable modem.

Bad luck. The important question is - did your insurance policy pay out?

No - the total cost of replacement was less than the policy excess!! Never mind.
