I understand that both these applications are used for backing up hard disc
partitions etc. But which is the better utility? Does naone ave
experience of these two programs and which do you recommend for use as the
best backup program? Thanks

Plus points for each would be welcome, if you have deep knowledge of either
of them.

Thanks for that. I wonder what you found so bad in Ghost that brings out
such a strong comment?
Also which version of Acronis do you use?? Is it Acronis drive image?

David

There is no best. It is just a matter of learning how to use each
program., both essentially do the same. It is likely many find the
Acronis GUI more intuitive than Ghost but that does not make True
Image 'better'. The big downside of True Image is it does not 'image'
to DVD directly.

I used ghost both long ago and recently. Different versions. The latest
carnation was an arse to get out of the taskbar to start with, then, when I went
to restore a backup with it it cocked up and it turned out the image it had made
was corrupt (despite verifiying it and making no less than 3 seperate copies).
In fact I switched to drive image, until symantec got hold of that.

In the older days it was around 50/50 for me and in a backup situation that is
just not acceptable.

Acronis does not do DVD/CDR. However, I found this to be the most unreliable way
to make a image under ghost anyway. I always back up to a seperate HDD and
network drive in any case. I am running the latest home version of Acronis. I
just find it to be reliable, something I have never had with Ghost. It's all so
easy to say ghost works well and will do more than acronis. The truth is not
making the backup, it's restoring a system from it. Ghost has a few more
features, I grant you, but if you can't rely on it what is the point?

You should check this out............Acronis Help states otherwise....but
you need DVD burning software installed.

i use True Image v9. Acronis support seem reasonable - their support does
answer Qs, and actually gives answers that are relevant. Less siad about the
electronic distributor (Digital River) the better - now reported for spam
that cant be turned off........

actually you need a burner package that can do incremental writes to the CD
or DVD - and you need that driver installed (which for me means buying a new
burner or an upgrade that cost more than True Image )

the alternative is to save it to a hard disk or network share somewhere, and
then burn that. 2 steps, but less money

I started with Drive image which then became Ghost when it was bought by
Symantec. I then changed to Acronis True Image. I gave up Ghost because it
was awkward, cumbersome and support was a bad joke. I have used Acronis
since V8 and I am now on V9 Home Build no 3567. In the simple way I use it I
don't think it can be beaten by any of it's competitors.
Backups can be made to a schedule and these run automatically in the
background without having to leave Windows or stop whatever one is doing in
the foreground. The backups I make are of the whole of my main HDD which has
the OS,Data and everything. The backup destination is a slave HDD and as a
second line of security I also make backups to a USB HDD. One is actually
running while I am writing this.
Restoration of the main HDD is simple and elegant. I boot from the rescue CD
and follow a wizard to complete the restore. In all it takes less than 15
mins to be back up again and working.
Support is pretty good and there is an active and knowledgeable web support
group. Get a Trial Version, I bought mine outright and it did just what it
said on the tin!

Richard.
