Hello

I have an adsl connection.
I want to send a very occasional fax. Anyone know of a free way to do
it. It will probably only be a couple of times a year. No need for an
incoming facility.

TIA

WinFax and a modem springs to mind.

You can mix a modem and ADSL easily. Modem is on baseband.

Any online fax send service will cost you money.

Who do you know (in the UK) who terminates T.38 faxes?

They probably went via regular VoIP... You can "get away" with it when
you have a good connection and use G711 codec, however it really does
rely on a stable connection to keep the analogue "modem" signals usable.

I's not an area I've spent much time with, but I'm assuming that's the
case.

Personally, I think it's an old technology that was a good stop-gap
while it lasted, but really ought to be consigned to the electronic bin
now.

We have email and digitial signatures - better than FAXes IMO.

Need to get more people using it though!

Until the legal profession start accepting emails as "evidence" instead of
faxes, we've a long wait!

I've never had a problem sending the occasional fax from a standalone fax
machine over Sipgate. Only done it 3 or 4 times in as many years but it
always worked.

The legal profession in particular cling to fax as it's not easy to
transmit a signature by email and a lot of legal documents require
signatures..! Yes you can attach a Word document or whatever but it means
scanning it in and a dedicated fax machine is a lot quicker.

: What, you mean a Fax actually became a legal document....
: There was I thinking it had to be a Telex to be official!
: ;¬))

Does Telex still exist..? Ah, bring back all those lovely noisy Creed
teleprinters..! Used to annoy my parents no end when I had a Creed 444 on
RTTY 20 years ago, especially when the autostart kicked in at 2am ;-)
