Hello,

Due to being too far away from the exchange for ADSL I've started looking at
other options. Fast24 ISDN anytime access at 19 quid a month seems very
reasonable but what else will I need to pay for? I expect I'll need to get
the ISDN modem and get BT to put the lines in - any ideas how much this
might cost?

Thanks for any info - one day I'll escape the 56K dark ages.

Dave.

If you convert your POTS line to Home Highway, ISTR the conversion charge is
£74.99.

The calls are something like 24.99 a month for a standard line, and (again,
IIRC) ~30 quid a month for Option 2. You'd have to check the BT Home highway
site for this...

http://www.bt.com/homehighway/

They'll come along, replace your master socket, and put in a Home Highway
box. The new ones have a USB TA (not a Modem) on board, so you plug the
cable into your PC and the HH box, install the software, and you have
incoming/outgoing fax, and internet access ready to go.

IME - the USB is a bit flaky, and needs unplugging & plugging back in on a
regular basis, but as a low cost solution, it's excellent.

HTH

Pete.

I got it for the same sort of reason (exchange not enabled) and I find
it a noticeable improvement over dialup.

If you do go down that route, another thing you might find handy is
the
Dynamic driver which allows the connection to automatically swap
between
64/128K. There is a manual mode, and I set it to stick at 64K during
the
day so people can phone me, and let it ramp to 128K in the evening
when
I'm connecting on my time.

Download from here :
<http://www.downloads.bt.com/btmidband/Dynamic_128k_1_5_27.exe>

Also, I have found the USB to be pretty stable, not requiring much in
the way of resets, BYMMV.

Good luck
