From the point of view of browsing the net, buying and selling on Ebay,
Online Banking, downloading films, music etc browsing the net in general,
can an XBox360 replace a PC? How useful and effective is the xbox in this
area? Do we have some Xbox users in this group? I assumed it was a gaming
console, but is it more like a general PC system?

Well I ask the question because a mate of mine reckons he's buying the kids
an XBox360 and he says he'll be able to do all the browsing/online
banking/shopping/ and all that stuff with the Xbox. So what can an Xbox do
and where is the line drawn on its capabilities?

Can it for instance,

1. Web browsing, Ebay, Banking Online, etc
2. Does it support SSL
3. Can it run software intended fr a 32 or 64bit Windows XP

HA HA HA! NO, it can not. Is hardly a detailed response.

Well this really isn't the right place for the question, a xbox site
would be better suited.

The answer to both 1 and 3 is out of the box, no.

It cant do any of the above. A hacked original xbox can browse etc, but it
is about as flexible as using that crappy browser that came with the sega
dreamcast.....

If you want to browse the internet, get a cheap second hand pc with win98se,
less then £50, and will do a much better job.

And think about Linux instead of Win98SE. Don't worry about the
schoolteachers wailing about needing to know Windows. They don't know
what OS people will be using in 2012.

I would suggest that you consider paying for a memory upgrade on a cheap
box, new or second-hand. More RAM will do more to speed things up than
anything else, whatever the OS.
