You could try these guys:

http://www.interparcel.com/

It's a totally automated online booking system but I've used them to send
stuff to France many times and never had a problem.

They're normally half the cost of booking a normal courier directly but they
use DHL and others, so there's no risk.

A smallish 3kg parcel to NY was quoted at £29.87 next day delivery (the
interparcel express tariff).

What are you sending and when does it need to get there? 2 1.5 kg parcels
are usually *much* cheaper than one 3 kg one if you can do that.

You don't say how you want to send it, is it valuable and does it require
insurance, do you want a signature on delivery, etc., there are a whole
host of options that affect the price. £48 is cheap if the contents of the
parcel are worth £10,000..!

how true, if one believes one can post anything in these groups

>Newsgroups: uk.media.tv.misc,uk.telecom.broadband,alt.radio.di gital

without considering better alternatives which would likely get sensible
answers. I have seen a number of OT posts in u.t.b (mostly to do with
use of the internet, problems with browsers), where I can "understand"
some logic in thinking it may be answered, and received without many
questions over suitability... But this is really a "mad" query.

Check the newsgroups for more than a few seconds and you would find
a) a group about "bargains" (hint: it is down in alt.*) and
b) a group about "ebay" (hint: within the uk.* hierarchy)

The second at least will likely have posters/readers who have had to
send packages worldwide and might have excellent advice for you.

2kg to NY £16.24p (£9.84p if paper) by Royal Mail surface (takes weeks
though).

Best deal I ever got was send 5kg boxes of papers etc. from France to UK in
1991 - cost about a fiver a box! The other way was much more expensive.

I've often found that, that posting something off topic in a newsgroup
where you are regularly active and helpful, will get more relevant
replies that posting in the right group where you have never visited
before. Often, you will get quicker response this way too, as people
may see your post, and think I can answer that, and since Alex has
helped me out in the past on more than one occasion, I'll answer that
right now.

Also, if you're posting, in a group you regularly frequent, you'll
have more of an idea as to whether the people replying to your posts
are decent people likely to be correct with their information, or
idiots best ignored.

Which begs the question, whether "theworldsgonemad" has ever posted in
the group I'm reading this on, and from memory, not, so one might also
wonder if the posting is from someone who has not bothered to consider
which group(s) might better answer the query, or if it is just from an
idiot, best ignored. I felt it was worth giving some pointers to some
groups where it might be better asked and answered, and whether prefix
"OT" is used or not, it might also make others think whether to cross-
post to groups where any "OT" query would get a similar response. PGM.
