the old mobi prc files which date back to Palm pilot mobipocket reader
also work - as long as they dont have the mobi DRM stuff.
If you like sci-fi there are a lot of free books in mobi format at the
Baen free library.

Amazon provide a free,

the kindle can read unencrypted PDF files directly - although it
doesnt know how to reflow the text on a page, so you may end up with
small letters, or using rotate to get a sensible text size.
It seems to handle others such as TXT but seems to choke on some HTML.
Amazon have added a few flavours recently, and format conversion via
an email system.
- plenty of info in their kindle help pages if you need it.
