That's usually a publisher restriction.
I personally think the Kindle is wonderful. It's blinkered to think that
only Amazon books work on it; there's lots of free stuff elsewhere, and
the common .mobi format is completely compatible. Amazon provide a free,
fast (5 mins) PDF conversion service too. And there is software around to
convert all the other formats too.
If anyone is into O'Reilly books, you can download the e-book of any book
you own for about 3 quid. Being able to carry all my ORA books (over 50)
in my pocket is really useful. And meeting minutes, etc. and any big
document.
And yes, I buy books from Amazon too.
