Hi all,
Can anyone kindly advice if this will extend the range on my Orinoco
PCMCIA card? Thanks!

Rated at 7.5dBi

I also see a few Orinoco range extenders rated at 2.5dBi, am I better
off with these given that they are made by Orinoco?

Not tuned in to wireless technology, would appreciate advice. Cheers!

I had the same problem, but it was cheaper to buy Orinoco USB adapter, which
is much easier to place for best signal, half an inch can make a difference.
I placed mine on window sill to get full 11Mbps signal from another
building.
Regards,
Martin

The antenna listed above is designed to be used when mounted on a metal
car body. If used on anything else, the antenna doesn't have the "gound
plane" which it is designed to work ON. It will then NOT have the gain
nor the propagation characteristics it was designed to have.

Thanks Valentine. Looks like the Orinoco is the better bet.

I wouldn't say that! 7.5dbi minus some loss, is probably still not below
2.5dbi, which is pretty much the standard rubber duckie antenna from any
router or usb-802.11 adapter.

I have the 5dbi version of the antenna you noted first.
On the roof of my car, it provides more consistent coverage, but not
necessarily greater range. Stuck upside down to my passenger door frame,
it seems to work just as well. I would think that at best this is a poor
half/groundplane off the bottom isde of the car roof.
Stuck to the whiteboard in my office, I get signal from the backside of the
whiteboard better than without the antenna. On top of a metal filing
cabinet, it does well, but not really a lot of difference.

In my case, I think the tiny cable offsets the gain.

Thanks for that. Anyone knows of an external antenna that will improve
the range of the Orinoco PCMCIA Gold card? :P

I have to chime in here on this, despite the fact that I have no info on
antennaes!

I am EXTREMELY dissappointed with the Orinoco Gold Car. In my business I
have an Orinoco AP600 in the downstairs conference room and my office is
upstairs (standard commercial bldg with steel construction and 4" Concrete
light weight concrete floor decks).

My wireless "B" Dlink (DWL-650+) and my new Wireless "G" Netgear (511T)
adapters work without any problem connecting to the AP downstairs. HOWEVER
the ORINOCO Gold Cards that I ordered with the AP ONLY works downstairs!!!!
It can not even pick up a signalExtremely dissapointing!!!

IMHO the Netgear cards are GREAT!!!

Aaron
