I have installed and am testing an ORINOCO AP-2000B/G. I have one PC
with a Dell Truemobile 802.11b USB card and one PC with an Orinoco Gold
11A/B/G PCI card. I have set WEP 64-bit encryption. The AP-2000B/G has
been set to accept a dynamic IP from my router. I have checked that the
AP-2000B/G can be accessed through a hard-wired PC and it has the
correct IP address and subnet mask (192.168.0.8, 255.255.255.0). Both
cards connect with excellent strength. The Dell with 11 mb and the
Orinoco at 54 mb.

However, both wireless PCs both show IP addresses starting with
164.xxx.xxx.xxx and subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.

Anybody have a handle on why?

Your not talking to the router. Try turning off the WEP and see if you
get an IP address. What your seeing is the default (auto) ip address
if non is give or it can't GET an ip address from the dhcp server ie:
your router..

Thanks for your comment, Gene. My AP-2000 is talking to the router. It
gets the correct IP address from the router.

My problem is that the two PC's using wireless NICS are being assigned
IP addresses quite different than the router. DHCP is not turned on in
the AP-2000. Router and AP-2000 IP's are in 192.168.0.xxx range. The
two PCs using wireless NICS are in 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range.

So my question is where are the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP addresses coming
from?

the 169 addresses are the default dhcp assigned, when the DHCP client is not
working correctly

In other words, assigned by the operating system. You don't have a
connection and it is timing out.

Either the WEP key entered is wrong, or the IRQ of the Toshiba is
playing problems.

Rule out number two by disabling WEP.
Then try to give a fixed IP address, and ping the AP, then the router,
then try to browse the internet. Use Tracert x.y.z.w, if you
experience problems. If this does not work, it is a hardware problem
with the PC Card installation.

Then try this WEP key: 12345; Use plain ASCII.
Then try to turn on DHCP again.
The 169.254.x.y addresss is a default address assigned by Microsoft.
