Sometimes when surfing using my bt broadband connection, the page that i
want to view will not appear & i get an error message 'timed out'
What is the correct way to 'reset' my connection, do i reboot the pc or push
the reset button on the back of the 8400 router ?
thanks

login to the router via your browser http://10.0.0.2 then in "Save
settings/reboot" choose Reboot. You can press the on off button at the back
but why bother. But don't press the "reset" button in the hole next to it.

forgot to say that login will only work in IE not Opera with that you have
to specify the full path

Oh, sorry. Right - when you said you get page timeout errors, it sounded
like a typical DNS resolve error.

DNS is the system where you type a web address into your browser, like
http://www.ibm.com and your browser asks the DNS server for the ip
address of http://www.ibm.com. The DNS answers with 129.42.19.99 and
then the browser opens a connection with the server on that ip address.

Anyway, if the DNS doesn't respond quickly enough then your browser
times-out. Of course the DNS server should respond quickly, so I assumed
that the ones you're using are broken so I suggested using some others.

But, as you're a n00b, presumably to ADSL, am I right in thinking you've
just upgraded from dial-up?

What operating system are you running?

Ah - it may be this then:

open a command prompt and type: ipconfig /flushdns

http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/dns_cache.htm

* How to deal with the problem
When you can't get to a web page because Windows XP or Windows 2000 has
cached an unsuccessful DNS lookup, you can:
o Try later (after the cache entry has expired)
o Reboot your computer (which clears the DNS cache)
o Clear (flush) the DNS cache manually (run "ipconfig /flushdns")
o Turn off the "DNS Client" service entirely (hurts performance by
requiring unnecessary lookups)
o Disable caching of unsuccessful ("negative") DNS lookups (best
method -- see below)

you login in to the router as the admin, then if using IE click advanced
then look down the menu as directed before for there options.

I do hope you have changed the admin password and its still not the default.
fore more help go to thios forum.
