Can't they find a suitable excuse after 10 days outage ? They are supposed to be
one of the worst ISPs so I expect at least some people may be experiencing the
same.

WHat have you been told so far, I.e. the cause of the problem?

The cause of the problem according to Orange is that they had a line
fault and their end, which has now apparently been resolved. But I
still have no access to websites. Well apart from Gmail and Google
groups etc. Which is where I am posting this from!

All seems a bit strange to me, I can email and receive from themre no
problems, so there is a definite connection. ( I have also managed to
download a file from Limewire) I have tried Firefox and IE6, cleared
all the cache, cookies etc as recommended my one of the "technical"
team, but still no joy.

I have even gone as far as to reinstall Windows and the USB modem
driver (Speedtouch 330)

I am at a loss as what to do now

Its more fustrating than the broadband being totally down, as I
100% have a connection, but cant view yahoo or ebay etc.

Once when I was on the phone they asked me to go to a dos box and ping
orange.co.uk, this failed, with 4 packets sent, but with 4 failures.
I tried with yahoo.co.uk and it came back successful, but I still cant
access the website.

Does anyone have any idea?

Daniel

It sounds like a DNS server problem.

Can you enter alternative DNS servers in the Speedtouch modem setup ? I confess
I'm not sure if it would be there but I know I can do that with my router.

In an earlier thread to this, someone suggested I change my DNS
settings to an open DNS server, (through IE) I tried this but it
didn't work. I am not sure I can change the NDS settings in my
modem. Not much software came with and nothing like anything to
change any settings

It's either DNS problems or hosts file infection? Run a thorough spyware
and virus check, I use spybot for spyware.

Also check your hosts file, you'll find it in C:\windows\system32\etc,
right click and choose open with.. then select notepad. It should have
127.0.0.1 localhost in it, if you find loads of other addresses in
there then you've been compromised.

To see if it's a DNS problem, go to internet explorer and type in
http://212.58.227.74, if this brings up bbc.co.uk website but browsing
manually to http://www.bbc.co.uk does not work then you have the wrong
DNS servers listed in your modem setup (leave it as auto-assigned).

Hope this helps.

This kind of thing is rarely mentioned in the simple user guides !

If it can be set up in your Speedtouch, you'll need to access its settings with a
browser (that's all that should be needed) as described here ....
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

Oh actually there seems to be a 'diagnostics' program for it.

If the speedtouch uses the windows DUN interface to get the connection
going the server address and all the other settings are likely to be
within the network connection itself rather than the hardware device.

That's what I was wondering myself but no expert has yet come along to give the
definitive answer !
