A friend knows I use usenet and wants to do the same but he is on Orange,
having previously been Freeserve and then Wanadoo and wants to know whether
they have a news server and, if so, what is it called? He used to use
usenet in the days when Orange was Freeserve but news.freeserve.com doesn't
work anymore.

They no longer have their own news server. I am also on the same system
and use news.individual.net which although not free is very reliable and
worth every penny of 10 euros per year.

More info at http://news.individual.net

Thanks Ivor. I will pass this on to him (for obvious reasons he won't see
it himself).

Agreed - cheap and mega-fast!
Text-only, though.

Wanadoo closed their news service last March

As someone else has pointed out, NIN is text only. Last time I looked,
www.news.astraweb.com had a deal offering 90GB of downloads for US$ 25
(they don't count downloading headers, and the quota doesn't expire in
a month like many monthly schemes, or in 6 months, or whatever... I've
about 150 GB left right now :-) Could last a lifetime for a text only
user, for a bit more than double the cost of NIN-for-a-year... but can
also offer around 35 days of binaries (depends on NG, I suspect).

I should have said (but followed up about NIN being text only) a big
"thank you for the reminder"... I remember seeing someone posted about
it in the newsgroup, but it's difficult to track what all ISPs are offering
especially when they're an ISP one has never used (or is not using now!)
