What are the optimal settings to get maximum download speeds? MTU settings
etc. How to change them?

Also, is there any difference using PPPoE or PPPoA.
Advantages/disadvantages?

I'm just trying to get the most of my money's worth.

TIA

Dan

Let us know what kit you're using and we'll try to help.

Main advantage to using PPPoA is that it's the only one that works in the UK

on the internet saying that BT now supports both.

BT also changed their kit, MTU is no longer a problem, the std. setting of
1500 is fine.

In respect to ADSL yes. Worthy to note that cable broadband uses PPPoE.

Plus BT are suppose to release support for PPPoE on ADSL in the not to
distant future.

I thought I had read that the standard 1500 MTU was fine somewhere, but
after having problems displaying certain websites with my new ADSL account
in April, my ISP told me to change my MTU to 14something and the problems
instantly diasppeared.

MTU needs to be supported as far as the router at your ISP

depending on how they buy DSL from BT, they may have a more stringent limit
somewhere in their system - e.g. in an L2TP router.

Hi Dan

The MTU and RWIN settings are best optimised for your line speed and
can, sometimes, make a significant diiference. Can you post back your
download speed - the rated one that it.

Cheers, Mike

I have read of people using certain routers that have problems with certain
sites, overcomeing them by reducing MTU. The implication being that path
MTU discovery is broken (probably by their own kit/settings) between their
PC and the site - probably nothing to do with their ISP as such.

PPPoA has less overhead than PPPoE (which may or may not work yet anyway).

So choose PPPoA, which is slightly more efficient with an MTU of 1478 in
the UK. If you need to go lower to address problems 1430 is the next best.

Andy.
