I just bought a linksys wireless B.

How long should it take to transfer a 3 GIG file over this ??

4 hours ?? lol. I think I would have paid the extra for the "G".

If your connection was 5.5 Mbps instead of 11 Mbps then 4 hours would be
about right.

3Gb/6Mb = 500 seconds, or about 8 1/3 minutes. Of course, taking into
account different variables such as your actual connection and transfer
speed, this may be more like 4 hours. Why would you want to transfer
such a large file over 802.11b or even "g" anyway? A simple ethernet
cable would be much faster.

Then again, if that's a 3G"B" file, multiply the times in my previous
answer by eight.

Very often these days people get "b" equipment for free (well, after
rebates that is). This is because the equipment's design is pretty much 5
to 7 years old. So, if transferring 3 Gbyte files was the reason you
bought a wifi router, then yes, you should have paid a bit more for a "g"
one. One other thing that will be killing you on "b" is printing
(relatively) large graphics to a network printer wirelessly.

If you want to enjoy the process instead of dealing with compromises, then
a CAT5E (CAT6) cable and 1000BASE-T equipment is an answer.

Thanx all.

I want to do backups onto another machine. It just means I can't take full
system snaps. I'll back up in smaller chunks at night. Thanx for clearing it
up.
