hello all
(sorry for the english)
is it possible to setup OpenVPN on a local network (ie workgroup),
not connected to Internet, between 2 WindowsXP ?
the purpose is to learn and test the product,
for ex to copy files between the 2 PC's, using VPN or not
if it's possible, which are the parameters (TUN, TAP, @IP, ...)?
thnx a lot in advance
Bernard, from Paris

bonsoir tous,
est-ce que qq'un a réussi à installer OpenVPN
entre 2 XP, en voisinage reseau, et avant tout est-ce possible ?
c pour faire un pti test avec ou sans vpn, par ex. des copies de
fichiers, entre 2xPC's voisins (1 seule carte reseau sur chacun);
je patauge dans les nombreux parametres et certifs,
merci d'avance pour une soluce,
cordialement

Not sure how you would make the connection as if both machines are on
the local network to start with then I don't think you would be able
to make another - I may be wrong though.

What I tend to do to test is use a dial up connection on one computer
and then use VPN to connect to a newtork; only cost is the dialup
charge.

I appreciate you would not then be in a position to test large file
transfers but I set up a folder containing only small files for this
purpose, if they work the big ones will also.

It is difficult testing a VPN if you have got no-one to test it with.

thnx for your quick answer, Geoff
I understand that you think a third PC is necessary to test ?
is it possible to avoid dial up, and instead use an ethernet
connection, with a second board on the receiving PC, acting
as a gateway only ?
is the network schema below relevant ?
--------------| | -----------| |-----
file server |--local network--| vpn server |---------| vpn client
--------------| |------------| |----
are TUN and TAP both possible ?
thnx in advance

Don't really need three - two would do.

Not sure if that would work, problem with trying to use VPN on what is
already a local network is that I don't know how you would confirm if
it is working or not.

That looks OK

ok for 2, but below you say my schema with 3 looks ok ?

using an analyzer on the line (on the hub),
which will certify the data is crypted or not

thnx, but may I avoid the 3rd PC ?
(vpn trafic -ie file transfer- between vpn client and vpn server)
