Opening a port troubles

Hi,

Please pardon the (hopefully) simple nature of this problem.

I'm using a bittorrent service to transfer and receive
large files amongst a group of people, but I am having some
problems. The bittorrent service uses port 6881. We have
Windows 2003 server running the server computer, through
which our broadband comes through. We have one network hub,
to which I connect to to reach the server. I am running
Windows XP Pro. The download speeds seem to be severely
limited when I know they should be going faster. I believe
I need to open up port # 6881 and forward it to my
computer, but I do not know how (or if possible). Does
anyone have any suggestions? I apoligize if I did not
supply sufficient information.

--Chris

Thanks in advance.

Chris-
Is the server acting as a router and NAT'ing your internal addresses? If
not, what is in place to provide that? Are you the only one using the
service? What is your connection speed to the inet? Have you put a machine
directly connected to the internet and received better speeds?

Yes my server is NAT'ing the internal addresses. I am the
only one using the bittorrent service on this particular
network, but I have tried it on other computers and
experienced the same slow speeds. We were have two
available internet connetions currently active, but the one
currently hooked-up is a wireless broadband that has a ul
and dl cap of 200 kilobytes/sec, which I can download at
from any dependable site. I have also tried our satelite
internet connection (max dl of ~50 kb/s) and experienced
the same slow speeds.

I know the service can be faster, as I have the exact same
set-up (bittorrent wise) on another network, and it
downloads the same files as a much faster rate.

Currently of a max dl speed of 200kb/s, I am downloading
with bittorent at ~10kb/s.

Hope that helps you - help me.

Thanks in advance.

Well, if the ports were wrong you wouldn't know the download speed was slow
because it wouldn't work at all, but if you know the speed is slow then the
ports are working,...so which is it? Does it work (but slow), or does it not
work at all?

Well, it works, just half-arsely. I had read from another
source though that bittorrent will work through the
internet naturally, but to achieve decent speeds you need
to open its primary port. Perhaps this is wrong, but I
don't believe so.

Since it appears that this Application uses a proprietary form of
communication, most likely the only people on the planet who would know what
is up with this thing is the people that created it. Do they have a
tech-support you can contact?

Well I sorta did, but they aren't too familiar with Server
2003, and they said that I needed to open up port 6881. But
blast if I can figure out how to play with the firewall
like that. I'm pretty sure that yo can just open ports with
the ICF on XP pro, but I haven't been able to find that in
Server 2003.

Grrr.

Let me know if this helps or not

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;317530

you'll be doing a static port translation from outside interface to your
static IP.

It probably does more than what they are telling you. It may do an initial
connection on 6881, but it may well use subsequent connections on random
ports. It is a common thing and most hardware Firewalls use the "statefull"
filtering to keep track of what is being done so that they would work with
it. I don't know for sure how ICF would deal with that. I suspect you may
have to run without ICF and protect the machine in other ways. I am just
guessing of course,...when their own tech support doesn't know, how is
anyone else supposed to?

Okay, thanks alot.

I guess I'll go buy an actual hardware device to use as a
firewall, as I don't like the lack of customizability that
2003 has. Thanks for all the help Phillip and netneg.
