only 11Mbps out of two G cards

I have two laptops, one with a Dell TrueMobile 1300 MiniPCI
card and the other with a Dell TrueMobile 1300 PCMCIA card.
Both are 802.11g compatible, but I only see 11Mbps on the
network. The signal strength is Excellent. I have them set
up on an Adhoc (computer-to-computer) network w/ no router.
I can browse the internet and everything is working fine,
except that I expected to see 54Mbps for the speed.

Any ideas why I am only seeing 11Mbps?

Thanks for the help.

- Killian

just check mine the other day, downloading from the net I got 2.5 mbps which
is what the IP is sending over the cable modem. Machine to machine was 40
mbps, I also have a 54 mbps router. Check it on a 100 megabyte file.
From what I understand, very few get full speed on wireless. So I think the
40 mbps is pretty good.

I'm only getting about 2.6Mbps when transfering files
between the computers.

that seems to be about B speed.\

Well, that's what I'm saying. I'm trying to figure out why
it is only running at B speeds not G speeds. Is there a
setting on the card or something? Can ad hoc
computer-to-computer networks only work at B speed?

AH HA! I figured it out. I had to go to the device manager
and click on the advanced properties of the card and then
change the IBSS mode to "normal" from 802.11b. Now I can
transfer a 100Meg file in under a minute and it shows 54Mbps
as the connection speed.

Hmm.... that's still only 14Mbps or so. Why is that? I
don't get it. Oh well... at least I figured this part out.

'Full-speed' on wireless is NOT 11mb/s, or 54 mbp/s. Those advertised
number's are the signalling rate, not the user throughput data rate. For b
the best you'll typically see is 5-7 mb/s, for g it's 30-40, data
throughput.

The rest is taken up by the gear itself in TCP/IP overhead, and actually
controlling the RF portion of the system, FEC, and other functions.
