Onetel Broadband Problems

In the house I'm living in we have onetel broadband (I know)! There is
a netgear dg834gv2 with the latest firmware update (v3.01.38). One
windows pc connected via ethernet to the router and one macbook
connected wirelessly.

Over the last few weeks the internet connection has been intermittent
at best and unusable at worst. Trying to load any website can take a
minute sometimes and sometimes the connection fails. Other times it
connects without any problems.

Someone in the house called onetel recently and they said everything
is fine and it must be a problem with the cable in the house. BT
checked the line and said it's fine.

I suspect onetel but I don't know what to ask them when I call back.
Is there diagnostic test they can do to check the service? I know they
will try to tell me everything is fine at their end and so the problem
must be in the house.

Thanks.

What do you mean by "sometimes the connection fails".
Does the router lose ADSL sync during these periods?*
Knowing this is fundamental to solving the problem.

Onetel are a bunch of shits.

Move to a decent (non-major-retail) ISP ASAP. Unless you want it for
tuppence in which case you get what you deserve.

Oh for God's sake.

The ISP is crap. Dump them.

I will check the lights on the router and the exact error messages
from my browser asap.

Yes, I can access the control panel no problem. I use my wireless
connection for that. I don't really have access to the wired pc.

Both

I checked last night and it's appears to be connected via an extension
cable coming from a separate phone line downstairs. It's not my house
and the telecoms wiring is a bit of a mess, but everything kind of
used to be ok. It's just gotten a lot worse lately.

I think the latter. It's been painted in over the years so a bit
difficult to tell.

There is a wireless phone downstairs and a regular phone upstairs. The
one downstairs is connected via one those small white filter (?) boxes
that sits between the phone and the socket on the wall. Can't remember
the details off-hand.

Sorry to be so vague!

It will not matter which version of the firmware, which router or which
modem is used. It will not work correctly if the service is not available.
A lot of firmware upgrades do not alter the way in which a router works for
most people. In the Netgear routers, changes were only really made for
those with an XBOX or wanting to use WPA2. Other upgrades would not be
noticable.
Choose a new ISP.

That is an undeniable fact, but not necessarily the cause of the
OPs immediate problems. The two posts the OP has
made so far tell us nothing about the bread-and-butter
facts we need to know.

Losing sync?
Unfiltered phones, Sky box etc?
Audible noise on PSTN?
Eliminate internal wiring?
Router stats at various times?
