Hi all

Confused I am!

I have a Dell laptop connected to our network.
It can see all resources and servers etc and can ping servers and other
workstations.
When I try to ping the laptop I get "request timed out".

Also, the laptop name does not appear in the list of machines on the domain.
How can the laptop connect to the network and access domain resources
without being authenticated on the domain?

I should mention that this laptop rarely sees the network. Would this make
a difference i .e will devices not connected for a given period simply
"drop-off" the list of domain computers?

Setup is Winserver2003 Std and XP pro SP2 clients.

TIA

Phil

You have checked the Windows Firewall settings, under the Advanced tab,
and allowed ICMP Echo (ping) on the laptop, haven't you?

(Just checking).

Thanks Phil

No I hadn't cos I deal mainly with desktops behind a corporate firewall, so
windows firewall is usually off (that's my excuse anyway).
But that's solved that little mystery.

Firewalls are programs or devices intended to prevent network
communication. I have to recite that to myself, sometimes...

FWIW, I deal almost exclusively with corporate desktops behind perimeter
firewalls, and I still use the Windows Firewall (with exceptions set either
via group policy or locally). Why not?
