I should know the answer to this but memory is fading.
I've just added an old PC running windows millennium edition to an existing
network. I can ping all computers and the router from this PC but cant
connect see them in windows explorer or connect to the internet. All
settings on this computer are identical to the existing networked computers
(obviously apart from the IP address). Someone point me in the right
direction please.

Hi Phil,
Yes I can ping an internet address (My ISP DNS) All settings in IE are set
correctly, identical to my other machines, which all work OK.

so this PC can connect to the internet in that it can ping. Can you
also talk to a web server for example 'telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80' then
Ctrl/C and return to generate an error.

If the settings were all correct it would work ;-)

Are all the MTU settings the same - different MTUs on a LAN can make a
mess.

Open up a DOS Window on the WinME box. Type in nbtstat -n

See if __MSBROWSE__ is listed. If it is then you have two computers on
the network running as the Master Browser. THe Master Browser maintains
a list of the computers and the computer assigned master browser status
is done by an "election" which sometimes fails when a new computer
joins the LAN and you end up with new computer also being the master
browser.

If thats the case you need to disable the Computer Browser service
which I can't remember how to do on a Win9x box.
