I have a crossover connection between my laptop (winXP) and my desktop
(win98SE) and data transfer works OK
XP is the master and connects to the Internet OK but when I try to connect
my 98 I get "failed- No dial tone
When I check the modem in 98 I get "com open" XP is not on line at this
stage
If I go on line with the XP and I check the 98 modem it shows as correct
Some of my settings are obviously wrong but which ones?

I have a laptop and a desktop with crossover cable; I dial
into the internet using the laptop which is set up with
ICS, and the desktop, the ICS client, can connect to the
internet as well. Is this what you are trying to do?

That's exactly what I am trying to do. I should say it has worked in the
past but suddenly doesn't now

sounds like its trying to access the internet thru a modem ...not the
network

go to your network settings and tell it to connect using LAN ...not modem

That is a good suggestion-it sounds right. Unfortunately I have just had a
major disaster- I have lost two of my 4 partitions and the system has gone
very wobbly so I am forced to reinstall the whole system- it needed it
anyway.
Will bear in mind what you said when I reinstall

Your network is on and works I presume, and when you
connect to the internet using the XP modem, your Win98
machine cannot access the internet through the network
correct? As Haggis said, it sounds like Win98 is trying to
connect via the modem.

Did you set up ICS properly? Make sure that
(desktop/client) Internet Explorer is set to use the
internet via the lan, and that on the desktop you have
added the XP machines (server/host)'s IP address as a
Gateway so it can resolve the DNS request for the client.
Usually this IP is 192.168.0.1 on ICS networks. Also are
you using ICS's DHCP service? Or are you assigning manual
IP addresses?
