This is quite possibly the weirdest problem I have ever seen. Ok here is
the situation. We have a Windows 2003 server on our network that has
multiple shared folders on it. These shares open up instantly from any
machine on the network. When we have clients VPN'd in to the network and
they try to open this share it takes over 3 minutes to display the folders
sometimes. The clients have been both Win 2000 workstation and Windows XP.
I have tried two different types of VPN clients (MS and Cisco VPN). Any
other share on the network and on the same server will open in seconds via
the VPN. Here are two shares on the same server with their specifications
and time to open via VPN.
Share1: 60,771 Files 8,611 Folders 5.04GB Time to open 5 Seconds
Share2: 27,832 Files 2,231 Folders 2.91GB Time to open > 3
Minutes
The permissions on both of these shares are exactly the same. I even tried
moving the same data to another server, sharing it, and the results were the
same (over 3 mins via VPN).
I tried using less detail in Windows explorer on the client machines
figuring that the client was trying to pull in all sorts of data about the
files. That didn't help at all. I tried accessing the same share through
dos. The dir command displayed instantly (go figure)! The only thing that
I can think of is windows explorer is not getting data that it is looking
for. I would like to download a 3rd party file browser and see if that
opens quickly. I hope someone has run into a similar issue. I am open to
any suggestions or ideas. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank
you for your time.
