I have a serious curve ball here,

We have a server 2003 (Just rebuilt from 2000, symptoms were the same in
2000) running RAS, Clients can dial in and connect to the server and get an
IP and show connected. However if Windows messenger is not started or doesn't
sign in there is no internet connectivity. If the Messenger does sign in
first the all network services are avialable. It is an Active directory
domain, and the only precursor to failure (It was working fine before this)
is about two weeks ago both of our global catalog servers were demoted almost
simultaneously. The exchange server was suddenly dumped all AD master roles
and GC (although I believe it was somewhat corrupt) everything is restored
now but we can't seem to solve this one with RAS.

HELP!!!

Check the properties of the VPN clients and make sure
you remove the "Use default gateway on remote network"
icon unless you want them using the default gateway on the
remote network?

That didn't help, however after further testing it appears that the problem
is going to be somewhere in authentication. With the windows messenger
running it signs in with the .net passport, or now if I have my outlook open
when I connect the dial up it authenticates to the exchange server and I have
a functional connection. However if no other service or application
authenticates then there is no functional connection.

Doesn't really make sense that messenger solves your internet connectivity
issue. When the problem occurs open a dos prompt and run:
nslookup www.msn.com. Do you get a response?
