one adapter connects the other doesn't on XP laptop to SMC router

Hi,
I am trying to use a Dell True Mobile 1150 series PCMCIA wifi adapter
in my XP-running laptop in place of a USB Linksys 2.4Ghz.

The Linksys works great.
Swapping it for the True Mobile I get the message that I am connected,
signal strength is Excellent, I have reentered the WEP code and all
seems great. Except that I cannot get access to the INternet. All the
standard pages I go after "fail".

I have compared the properties of the two adapters when installed and
they seem virtually identical. IP Address in the 192.168.2.xx range,
gateway is 255.255.255.0

any clues as to what I am missing?

The gateway should be set to the router's IP, normally 192.168.1.1

You say the card is using a static IP or a DHCP IP of the router. Can you
ping any of the sites with the new card at the Command Prompt? If this is
IE you're using, did you clear out the Temp Files out of IE that can be
holding old pages?

My error. I meant Subnet Mask - for whatever that's worth.

Hmm, I am not great at this.
I think the card is using DHCP IP of the router.
I can ping this IP address 192.168.2.4 successfully AND ping the
router 198.162.2.1 but when I try to ping a website (ping
www.yahoo.com) it fails.

when I swap adapters and use the USB adapter, I can ping an outside
website successfully.

You can determine if you have a good connection on a machine by entering
IPconfig /all at the Command Prompt and look at the DNS IP(s) the ones
indicating that the machine has a valid Internet connection and is
communicating with the IPS's DNS (Domain Name Server). You can compare
them with the machines that have a good Internet connection as opposed to
the wireless NIC you indicate has an IP from the router but no Internet
connection.

identical.
Except that connection 12 below connects to the INternet and
connection 2 (the TrueMobile card) does not.

You'll notice the DNS Servers IP(s) which are pointing to the ISP's
(insightbb.com) servers and are not 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP(s) Private Side IP
(s) of the router. That's a valid connection that I know about.

The IP(s) for your connection are Private Side IP(s) of the router and are
not pointing to the ISP's DNS Servers. Without the connection pointing to
the ISP's (Domain Name Servers) IP(s), the computer -- /the O/S on the
computer will not be able to resolve URL(s) like www.microsoft.com to
Microsoft's public (www) IP and the computer cannot make contact with any
site, because there is no DNS on the network to use and do an URL to IP
look-up to resolve the www IP.

I don't know how you're getting what you're getting. I think you need to
look at another machine on your network that has a valid connection with
the ISP and look at the IP(s) with IPconfig /all.
