Can someone explain what microfilters are and why they seem to be supplied
in multiples?

A micro-filter is designed to plug into your phone socket (similar to a
standard splitter used to connect multiple telephones). Its purpose is
to separate voice from data and must be connected to each phone socket
in your house. If you do not have a telephone, or any device which uses
the phone line, a micro-filter isn't required. Most ISPs and retailers
sell micro filters.

AFAIR the filter stops your voice frequency noise spilling back into
the ADSL modem, and dropping the connection.

They come in multiples because most people have more than one phone
these days. Except for unusual conditions, you need one filter on each
phone socket that does NOT have the ADSL modem plugged into it.

Does that mean the PC can be plugged directly into the socket without a
filter ?
