Odd - router allowed login from incorrect IP?

I just logged into my router by typing 192.168.01 (note this is not a
typo, the last entry is 01)

Now my router is on my network at 192.168.0.1, and it is a Netgear
DG834G.

Why was I able to login to my router using the incorrect IP?

Hmm, mine does that. I did have a thought as to why but then I tried
it and it didn't do what I expected.

What browser are you using?

It works with mine too. It's probably something to do with the way
Windows converts a dotted decimal string to whatever it uses internally,
the same thing happens with ping.

Doesn't work with mine. XP Pro and a BT Voyager 2100, I'll grab the
laptop from the car later and try with that as it's fully service packed
up. This machine only has SP1 because it has a Psion Wavefinder on it so
there may be something in the later 'fixes'.

In the info bar at the bottom of ie7 it auto corrects this and connects.
I use 192.168.1.1 and trying 192.168.11 does not correct this and
does not connect.

192.168.1 = 192.168.0.1
192.168.2 = 192.168.0.2
..
..
192.168.256 = 192.168.1.0
192.168.257 = 192.168.1.1
192.168.258 = 192.168.1.2
..
..
192.168.512 = 192.168.2.0

My Linux box behaves this way too.

Suggests it's an XP 'thing'... I doubt there's any security issues
surrounding it as you still require a logon to the router, but it seems
a odd anomaly.

Doubt it as I'm on W2K SP4.
