Odd Belkin router behaviour

A colleague is having problems with his broadband: he has a stable
connection from his Belkin wireless modem/router (model F5D9012uk) and can
connect his laptop wirelessly, but when he plugs in his desktop the
connection drops out and the router can't re-establish any sync with the
exchange.

This isn't something I've come across before, and the cabling between the
router and computer is OK (we've tried alternative networking cables). Has
anyone come across this before?

Cheers.

Henry,

I'm not an expert on these devices (still haven't got an answer to my own problem yet), but I did notice when I was trying to fix my Belkin wireless router problem that if I left the ADSL cable plugged into the telephone socket and then plugged the Speedtouch ADSL modem into my PC and connected that to another phone line it (not suprsingly) kicks off the Belkin.

Another couple of things that may be worth looking at. Does the PC have a fixed IP address? If so is there any chance it is the same as the Wireless Router - that would cause problems but probably not fail the ADSL line.

Do you have all the telephone sockets protected with Filters?

Note also that the Belkin Wireless G Router which has model number F5D9012uk is actually a F5D7632 (see on the underneath of the router it will also show a number like F5D7632-4) You could download the latest firmware from the Belkin site and see if this helps.

Neil

Certainly have but not that way around

Check the patch lead to make sure that it is correct

Get hold of a AM radio & hold it fairly close (but not on) to the PC
& patch lead to see if there is any interferrence (you have to turn
both the radio & the computer on off course), same with any auxilary
equipment plugged into the PC.

It could be the port in the router, try another one.

Have found at least 5 Belkin routers in the last year where the power
supplies have caused interferrence problems & loss of service, hence
my first comment.

Let me guess your friend lives some way away from their exchange
don't they, if they don't I would be more inclined to check the router
first...

Not that specific issue, but shitty belkins are like German tourists -
everywhere!
