O2 Mobile Broadband - cooling off period??

A technologically challenged lass I know has at last taken the plunge
and decided to "get broadband" - "I can get it added to me contract" at
the O2 shop she said.

She got it today and phoned me when it didnt work - and talked of
fitting *the sim" to her laptop. It wasn't until that point that I
realised that she had bought mobile broadband and my guess is it doesn't
work because there is no 3G signal where they live. They want normal
broadband.

A quick look at the O2 website mentions a 14 day return guarantee period
when buying online, but unfortunately this was not bought online.

I suppose she will take it back to the shop but suspect they will try
and get her to upgrade to their Mobile and Home Broadband package for
"just £19.89 per month" . . . which is not very good value when all
she needs is normal home broadband over her BT phone line which would be
half that from Plusnet.

Is she stuck with the contract now or does she have any right of return
if it doesn't work (or doesn't work properly) due to lack of 3G signal
where she lives?

Evolution is the survival of the fittest. The "technologically challenged"
will not survive!

Will do - thanks.

I see O2 offer home broadband for £7.34 pm (to O2 customers) with
unlimited downloads (- wish I could get that sort of offer where I am)

Does anyone know if O2 BB has a good reputation?

I see it is a 12 months contract which doesn't inspire confidence.
Perhaps she'd be better with Plusnet who have the confidence to offer a
1 month contract for two quid extra.

Why? What has contract length to do with quality of service?
O2 has a great reputation for broadband in the UK.

Why would you advise her to pay more each month? I don't see your
logic unless you want her to buy something expensive that is not as
good as what you have - for some power trip!

Nothing wrong with o2 broadband. Go and compare what they allow
and the speeds involved compared to other ISPs that will charge far
more for a monthly contract. Why would you only want to sign up for
a month anyway? if there is a problem you complain to the ISP and
then to www.ispa.org.uk which sorts it out in no time.

Don't go advising people when you haven't done any research.

She seems fairly thick if she agreed to something she never wanted.

If I'm told that O2BB is crap I'll advise ignoring it.

What a peculiar suggestion.

OK I've got a vote for and a vote against. Do you speak from experience?

The speed is supremely unimportant for most purposes. It is the GB per
month and reliability that matters. O2's offer sounds too good to be
true and way below the price of most ISPs - hence my caution.

Do you judge ISPs only by their advertised speed and price?

Why would you only want to sign up for

It is not a question of signing up for just a month, rather the option
of baling out if there is a problem. Contacts are commonly 12 or 18
months, which is quite a long time and not a good idea when prices are
falling.

Really? Then the large ISPs don't have unhappy customers and no one here
would advise avoiding the likes of Talk Talk or Tiscali?? I'm not sure
you know what you are talking about.

You would be best to do your own research.... always works for me. A good
place to start is http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isp/compare.html wher you
can compare O2 against many other isp's of your choice.

Works great for me, and a huge improvement on the previous Virgin ADSL
I had. I've gone from a typical 2Mb/s and often less (on an 8M
service) to a typical 5Mb/s, occasionally 6Mb/s and rarely less than
4Mb/s. And the service is more reliable too. Virgin used to drop
connections and take a while to come back. O2 has not done that so far
(6 months). I changed routers too, from the Virgin supplied Thomson to
the O2 supplied Thomson. That might have had an effect.

And all that at half the cost. Note that there's a 20Mb/s service for
just a few quid more. I've never tried it, though, and have heard
nothing about it. Tempting...

Steve.

They look pretty good there.
