Hello

Bit of a desperate one this....

Signed up to O2 Broadband for 8meg service.

8meg sync speed no problem, 8meg throughput no problem during day.
However less than 1meg (400k usually) seen during peak periods 8pm til
11pm.

Tried upgrading to their 20meg service, 19meg sync speed (although i
have seen 21meg sync). Brilliant.

However same 400k throughput in the evenings.

O2 engineers called and admitted congestion issues in southampton and
sheffield areas. I'm on the woolston southampton exchange.

They said it was due upgrade but could be anytime in the next 2
months.

I proceeded to get my MAC and am moving to AOL (no minimum term) on
the 9th December, LLU. AOL say that i will only get 3.8meg sync - ????
why is this? I realise ADSL Max is only 8meg as apposed to ADSL2+ but
other speed estimates via bt website say I will get 6-8meg, yet AOL
only estimate 3.8?? are they wrong?

3.8meg is fine but i'm curious.

Now the dilemma...

Thursday and Friday night where I am usually crippled to 400k
throughput on o2, i have seen a dramatic improvement. I am getting
16/17meg during peak times. I spoke to o2 and whilst they said
upgrades were due during this week at my exchange, they couldnt
confirm the work had been completed or explain why i was experiencing
dramatically improved speeds.

What do you think? We are so lucky to get 19meg sync speed in this
country, we must be like 1% of the population or something....it seems
a waste to go to AOL on 3.8meg when this is potentially a one off
because we are only renting and may never live as close to an exchange
again.....but the service has been crap until the last couple of
days!!!

Any ideas if o2 really has improved? The risk is that i stay with them
past my 30 day money back guarantee and then we are stuck to a 12
month contract.....

Does anybody know the conditions of leaving o2 and returning say 3
months later? (if AOL are crap too)

Darren

I should also point out something weird too

Previously using the speedtest.net website it would always show
maidenhead as the yellow icon to use for testing.
However, since my speed improvement its been showing dublin, ireland
as the yellow icon???? we're in southampton!!

You can set your prefferd location to test at.
I find Maidenhead can give very mixed results, Dublin and London always seem
to agree.

It's not known as "AOHell" for nothing. It's not an ISP either, it's a web
portal.

Tiscali are fairly bad in my experience. Port blocking which included
stopping users having access to their own news server. Throttling
everything
between 4 and 9pm including YouTube. Stopping access to BBCi and 4OD
as they were selling TV packages at that time so didn't want people getting
TV for free. Incompetant engineering staff who couldn't even fix a problem
without getting advice from outside IT companies, or keep their own system
running for more than a few days without problems. They made a right mess
of Network Shaping by setting controls to the reverse of what they should
be!
Tiscali had a number of complaints to www.ispa.org.uk - more than most
other companies. They also have a call centre emplying staff who can
not communicate clearly and effectively in English.
So I would say tiscali werw worse than AOL, although AOL will hound you
to stay and refuse to let you cancel which can mean a complaint to the
police
about unauthorised credit card transactions.
