BT has been chosen as preferred supplier for a multi-million pound next
generation network (NGN) using broadband technology across North Yorkshire.
The company was chosen by NyNet(
http://www.nynet.co.uk/) - the organisation
established by North Yorkshire County Council with Yorkshire Forward and the
region's public sector technology procurement organisation Adit.
Working in partnership, BT says it will assist NyNet in providing next
generation digital services throughout the North Yorkshire region. A
high-speed fibre optic network will link a number of points of presence,
allowing access to a range of internet-based data, image and voice services.
The network aims to provide better public services and improved access for
service providers.
John Anderson, BT regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said:
"This is an exciting initiative to bring the enormous potential of
high-speed information and communications services to the full range of
public sector organisations across North Yorkshire.
"BT is committed to making this project a huge success as a partner,
deploying our skills as the provider of world-leading technological
expertise and knowledge."
North Yorkshire County Council corporate director John Moore said: "This
important step brings the opportunity to revitalise North Yorkshire through
new business and social opportunities very much closer.
"Compared with much of the UK, many areas in the sub-region do not have a
'state of the art' broadband service. We are determined that, with NyNet,
organisations and citizens in North Yorkshire will be at the forefront of
new developments and have access to the same advances as people living and
working in Leeds, Birmingham or Manchester."
Both parties are now working on the final stages of contract planning, with
the intention of launching services from NyNet next summer.
