I have a 2003 server running only nwlink and it has to stay that way. I need
to connect it to a printer, also running nwlink, on the same network. I
cannot seem to do it.

Wow. I can see that you anticipate getting a lot of flak for that.

That's a bit too vague for anyone to be able to help you, I'm afraid. Try
posting again with a lot more detail. What do you mean by "connect it to" ?
Use the network printer from the server? As a local printer?

I haven't had to use that stuff for so long it's beyond rusty, but perhaps
you could explain exactly how you're trying to do this and what errors
you're getting.

How Can I connect a printer that has only the nwlink/ipx protocol to a 2003
server that has only the ipx/nwlink protocol. The printer is not connected
directly to the server but is on the same subnet/broadcast doamin. I hope
that helps...

When you say "connect" I still don't know what you mean. Do you want to
*share* this printer on the W2k3 server? Or do you want to use the printer
while you're logged into the server? Do you have Client Services for Netware
installed? I'm presuming it still exists for W2003. If so,you ought to be
able to create a NetWare port in Windows for this.

Beyond that, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, sorry. I haven't had to deal with
this sort of thing since I used to support NetWare (back in the 4.x days,
and even then I didn't do a lot of it) and we had a Netware print server at
the time.

I'm still secretly dying to know why you have to use (only) NWLink/IPX in
the year 2007.

yes, I need to share this printer. I need to do this because I have a VPN
client that does not allow split-tunneling and my users need to be able to
get back to an internal drive and printer share. Using another protocol was
the only way i could make this happen.

Hmmm...creative! It can't be the most optimal way to solve this problem, but
that said, see if you can create a Netware port. Beyond that, not sure what
to tell you.

Lanwench (creative name). Do you think that using IPv6 would help alleviate
my split tunneling problem?

It used to be apt. Now I'm thinking of changing it to lancrone

Nope.

Can you describe the exact network config/situation you're facing? If you
have internal users who need to access a remote network via VPN, why not see
if you can configure the VPN connection between routers, instead of using a
client app?

Lanwench,
The VPN client is not in my control...it is in the hands of our state
payroll system and I cannot do anything about that. Each of our clients has
this VPN client (COMA)installed and there is no split-tunneling. The users
need to get back to a network share as well as a network printer to complete
their work when connected to VPN. What would you suggest?

I know it may not help, but when a problem is caused by something I have no
control over I take the problem to the people who caused the problem and
dump it in thier lap. Take the whole situation to the people responsible
for implementing this COMA thing and get them to come up with a solution,
which is most likely to come up with a way for the COMA thing to do
Split-Tunneling. They are just as responsible for making the "workflow" of
people's job happen properly as you are,...actually more so in this case
since it is their implementation that is breaking things.
